The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), funded by Te Pou (New Zealand's National Centre of Mental Health Research, Information and Workforce Development) has developed an online orientation programme to support overseas trained doctors in their work within the New Zealand mental health system. The aim of the programme is to support international medical graduates from any medical discipline who have recently arrived in New Zealand to improve their understanding of generally accepted mental health care practices in New Zealand. Whakataukisayings that reflect the thoughts, values and advice of past generations. They are usually very succinct and often use metaphor to convey key messages Haere mai te Ihi… Haere mai te Wehi… Haere mai te Mana… Haere mai te Tapu… Draw near o Excellent ones… Draw near o Awesome ones… Draw near o Charismatic ones… Draw near o Sacred ones… This is a pithy expression of awe and wonder, and is used on special occasions to greet and pay tribute to the dignity and status of eminent guests. The programme consists of six online learning modules, each containing approximately 45 minutes of online learning material. In each module you will find a range of learning experiences including case studies, reflective questions, suggested reading and viewing materials, and links to further reading and resources. This project has been developed with the assistance of a Reference Group comprising RANZCP fellows and staff, cultural and consumer advisors, a GP representative and overseas trained doctors, and representatives from other mental health organizations.
